Travel to Chichen Itza Chichen Itza is a 3 hour drive from Cancun, and around a 2 1/2 hour drive from Merida, lying adjacent to Highway 180. Local buses are available from Merida to Chichen Itza, as well as from Cancun. Aerocaribe offers a small plane commuter service from Cancun, Cozumel, and Chetumel. Hotels and trailer parks are just a few kilometers west of the ruins. The site is open approximately from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. The most relaxing way to see everything is to take a couple of days in which to do it. Otherwise, set aside a full day for a quick tour around the 10 square kilometer site. Try to arrive early thereby missing the crowds which arrive later on the tour buses. Amenities include a new visitor's center with gift shops, rest rooms, restaurants, and an information center. There is a sound and light show in the evening. Day trips are offered by many hotels and travel agencies.
